What Is The Swine Flu?

H1N1 Virus

The swine flu or its more proper name the H1N1 virus is a new strain that has been getting lots of publicity due to it's outbreak in 2009. Influenza is not a bacterial infection but a viral infection that has been around for hundreds of years.

Viral infections like this flu have no cure. It's just like when you get a cold. The over-the-counter products that you take are designed to treat the symptoms. They will become less severe as the virus runs it's course.

This flu was so named because earlier strains of influenza A had genes in common with the flu virus common in pigs. When the swine flu was first announced, many people believed that only those who worked with pigs could get it. They even denied they had this type of flu to avoid being associated with pigs.

Virus Not The Same Strain As Found In Pigs

This virus is not the same strain as found in pigs. It does have some genes in common with them but also with birds and other human strains of the flu.

The virus differs from the seasonal flu in its main viral composition. This is what makes each strain unique. When vaccinations are prepared, each contains a portion of the virus specific to that strain.

The H1N1 flu virus has been discovered to be similar to an influenza virus that existed in the early 1900s. As such, very few people living today have any immunity that may protect them from it. That is one reason why there is such a concern about it.

Without previous immunity, more people can possibly contract it and become sick.

Getting Vaccinated With The Seasonal Flu Virus May Help To Build Immunity

Flu Vaccine Getting vaccinated with the seasonal flu virus may help to build up your immunity to fight back against the H1N1 virus. At the very least, your symptoms may be less severe than someone in a high risk group or people who do not receive the seasonal flu vaccine.

Doctors and scientists recommend the seasonal flu vaccine because it is still possible to become infected with that strain.

This flu has nothing to do with pigs and anyone can get it if exposed. There is a vaccination on the market now that is being distributed to help reduce the incidence of the H1N1 flu.
